Genealogists study part 5

I finally got back in to my miniatures for a few hours this weekend. I started with good intentions of putting the wall paper on but ended up starting to try and miniaturise some documentation for the scene. I can't believe how long this took! I wanted to use some of my own genealogy documentation and although it is so tiny it can't be read, it's rather cool to know that all these 'little bits of my family and I' will be in the diorama.

2 photos below: I miniaturised a screen shot of my genealogy software [Family Tree Maker 2010] for the little laptop that is going in the diorama.






I did finally get around to printing out the wallpaper on acid free 120gsm card. This is light enough to print easily in my printer and flexible enough to attach to walls, but firm enough so that the glue will not interfere with the integrity of the end product. After printing, I sprayed with matt sealer.





Affixing the largest piece to the diorama.

I used the blank edge of the sheet of A4 to enable me to line up the next piece.


Papered up to and around the window


Complete. I ensured the wallpaper went just around the front edges to hide the bare cardboard


Architraves affixed to the window to hide the wallpaper edges



For the ceiling, i decided to 'sponge dab' pale pink on to this.
Paper is placed in the diorama to protect the wallpaper from any paint.



Using the sponge gave a nice texture to the finished ceiling

'Mouldings' are affixed to the join at the wall and ceiling


Whilst waiting for the paint to dry, i painted one of the tiny framed photos i've made - that's my G G G G Grandmother Mary Ann PAWSON [later CASTLE] nee LAWSON and...

awwww how cute is that!

Another satisfying afternoon continuing on my diorama. This time, concentrating on making 'bricks' for the exterior. Cutting the 'bricks' for the exterior. These are made from egg cartons. After this, each corner of the brick is cut off ever so tiny so that it gives a more realistic look when glued on the diorama. Colouring the 'bricks' with soft pastels until i get the shades i want. The 'bricks' are then affixed to the diorama box A 'spacer' is used to ensure level placement of the bricks and an even space to 'grout' later to complete the job. Row upon row.... Making connections - the s.s. Tainui Disaster

I snap thousands of grave and memorial photos.  Of course sometimes they 'ring bells' in my head as the various facts come together during research.   New Zealand is a small world after all and  lives of those who have crossed each others paths for some reason or other does happen. Here are a couple that have that connection and one of them, Charles WILLIAMS provided a few surprises. The s.s. Tainui Disaster [32] The Tainui which was a wooden cargo vessel, was carrying a load of benzine that it was ill equipped to do so.  The inevitable happened, she exploded near Shag Rock on the Canterbury Coast, off Gore Bay in North Canterbury and all but 1 of the 9 crew were drowned on 16th September 1919. The sad news was first conveyed to the Newton Police Station by a youth named Arthur Shannon, who at that time simply knew of the suicide of the murderer. Constable Clark sent word to the central police station, and at once proceeded to the scene of the crime. It was not until some time afterwards that it was known that the perpetrator of the rash act had also committed the fearful crime of murder.
