I was rudely interrupted in my quest to continue some headstone photography today as the weather turned quite rainy so back home it was to continue on my Genealogist's study :-)

I decided to complete the window and floor today at least.

I use Mylar* for the windows. This is perfect as it is clear and very firm to work with.


Cut 4 pieces of 'window framing', this will be fitted to the mylar.


Trimming the frames to fit the exterior architraves, i then carefully sliced down the centre of each piece of window framing, not fully through, but half way through the thickness and then slid the frame along the mylar.

I have glued it to appear open.

Lighter colours for the interior


Completed painting the exterior window frame and sill. The sill is lighter colour than the frame.
The exterior of the box is still to be completed, so any rough edges of the painting will be obscured when that is complete.

First coat of water based polyurothane - 3 coats to do in total.

Another satisfying afternoon continuing on my diorama. This time, concentrating on making 'bricks' for the exterior. Cutting the 'bricks' for the exterior. These are made from egg cartons. After this, each corner of the brick is cut off ever so tiny so that it gives a more realistic look when glued on the diorama. Colouring the 'bricks' with soft pastels until i get the shades i want. The 'bricks' are then affixed to the diorama box A 'spacer' is used to ensure level placement of the bricks and an even space to 'grout' later to complete the job. Row upon row.... Making connections - the s.s. Tainui Disaster

I snap thousands of grave and memorial photos.  Of course sometimes they 'ring bells' in my head as the various facts come together during research.   New Zealand is a small world after all and  lives of those who have crossed each others paths for some reason or other does happen. Here are a couple that have that connection and one of them, Charles WILLIAMS provided a few surprises. The s.s. Tainui Disaster [32] The Tainui which was a wooden cargo vessel, was carrying a load of benzine that it was ill equipped to do so.  The inevitable happened, she exploded near Shag Rock on the Canterbury Coast, off Gore Bay in North Canterbury and all but 1 of the 9 crew were drowned on 16th September 1919. The sad news was first conveyed to the Newton Police Station by a youth named Arthur Shannon, who at that time simply knew of the suicide of the murderer. Constable Clark sent word to the central police station, and at once proceeded to the scene of the crime. It was not until some time afterwards that it was known that the perpetrator of the rash act had also committed the fearful crime of murder.
